Logan held tight to Simone’s hand as she stood shivering at her side. Doubtless, Simone had somehow become aware of the imminent danger and was petrified with fear, her slight body as rigid as a statue and almost as solid, Logan mused as she attempted to pull Simone along. Her efforts were to no avail. Simone remained rooted to her spot, staring intently at the gathering of Witherbeast. Could Simone see in the dark as well? Logan did not think so. There was a blank expression in Simone’s eyes as she watched the beasts, like she somehow knew what was going on without needing to see it. Her shaking had almost stopped, and she became much calmer.

“We have to end this,” Simone whispered. The hissed sibilants seemed to bounce off the ancient stonework, causing Logan to look about in alarm. “They were human once, and they are suffering. Can you not feel it?”

Logan regretted telling Simone the details of Witherbeast metamorphosis. Tugging at Simone’s arm again, she said, “Believe me when I say I understand your concerns, but now is neither the time nor the place to engage the creatures. We must move, quickly before we are discovered—”

“No!” Simone’s voice pierced the stagnant air like a dagger. Every Witherbeast in the area paused in its activities and turned its head toward them.

Logan took Simone in her arms and flung her over her shoulder, then began running as fast as she could from the scene. Sounds of the Witherbeast pursuing close at her heels would haunt her for the rest of her days, but still she ran, ducking and leaping clear of the obstacles in the grand chamber as she ran toward the cave-in. After what seemed an eternity, Logan scrambled over the large stone that had become dislodged from the ceiling, and she and Simone rolled to the relative safety on the other side.
